Of Mice and Men- Chapter 1-6 Annotations

Pages 1-10
1."A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green." (Page 1).

I thought that it was pretty cool how this book was based in California. The location is a little bit close to Patterson. I read books before, but the locations in the book was never that close. It makes you think how people in the same area were back then. It also makes you think of how the location was before, as well.

2."on the sand banks the rabbits sat as quietly as little gray, sculptured stones. And then from the direction of the state highway came the sound of footsteps on crisp sycamore leaves." (Page 2).

I think it is amazing how i actually think of sculptured stones in the middle of a grassy place when they say, "on the sand banks the rabbits sat as quietly as little gray, sculptured stones." I just think of the house decorations that are suppose to be in the front of the house or in the garden. When they say, "And then from the direction of the state highway came the sound of footsteps on crisp sycamore leaves," it makes me think of a movie called "The Village." It has these people that live in their own place in a forest or something like that. At the end, they find out that they are so close to civilization that there is a highway that is a little bit near from where they live.

3."Uh-uh. Jus' a dead mouse, George. I didn' kill it. Honest! I found it dead." (Page 5).

When i read this, i just wondered, "Uhmm. Who would want to touch a mouse that is already dead?" I felt a bit surprised and shocked. I was also wondering why Lennie was hiding the mouse from George in the first place. For a guy who is pretty big, he sounded like a child. That is when i began thinking, "I wonder whats up with Lennie."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 11-20
1.""Jus' wanted to feel the girl's dress- jus' wanted to pet it like it was a mouse- Well, how the hell did she know you was jus' wanted to feel her dress?" (Page 11).

When George said this, that is when I found out why they got out of there old job. This interested me because I wondered why Lennie would touch the girls' dress and just hold on to it. It sounded like Lennie was trying to do something to her, but the way he acted made me think he did not touch her dress because he wanted something.

2."I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody'd shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself. No, you stay with me. Your Aunt Clara wouldn't like you running off by yourself, even if she is dead." (Page 13).

I found this quote pretty interesting because of how Lennie and George are so close. I thought it was pretty amazing how George wanted to still be with Lennie and cares about him that much that he even knows how Lennie's Aunt Clara would think if Lennie was running of by himself. From what i read so far, it seems like Lennie and George have a bit of a connection. Maybe even from a few years back when they were young. I like to think of them as travel buddies.

3."They let the nigger come in that night. Little skinner name of Smitty took after the nigger. Done pretty good, too. The guys wouldn't let him use his feet, so the nigger got him. If he coulda used his feet, Smitty says he woulda killed the nigger. The guys said on account of the nigger's got a crooked back, Smitty can't use his feet." (Page 20).

I think that they only made Crooks fight because he was African American and they wanted him to get all beat up. I do not like what they did because it is just not right to hate on a race just because of their color. They made the fight a little bit even with Smitty not using his feet, but I still think it was not a good idea. Crooks has a crooked back, so that is worse than not using your feet. And that is more pain if he got hit, too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 21-30
1. George said,"His name's Lennie Small." (Page 21).

I found this quote to be a bit ironic. Lennie is a pretty big guy, as the book has said, but i thought that it was wierd that his lastname was Small. Somebody might have thought that Small was George's lastname. I thought that it was suppose to explain how Lennie is a big guy, but he still acts pretty small. Lennie is not what you expect when you first see him.

2. "I wasn't kicked in the head with no horse, was I, George?" (Page 23).

I think this is when i really found out about George and how he was mentally handicap. I understand how i forget about things, but i would know if i got hurt or not. I found this interesting because I really did not know why Lennie did not even know if he was actually hit by a horse. And also, why they always had to hide things about them.

3."Well, that glove's fulla vaseline." (Page 27).

I found this interesting because i did not know vaseline was known back then. I thought vaseline was made like probably 30 years ago, but now i believe thoe products that the cover says was established in the 1800s. I also found it interesting that Curley had vaseline all over his hand. I did not know exactly why he would do that. I first thought that because of his job and how he gets his hands all rough, he would want to keep one soft for his wife.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 31-40
1."Listen to me, you crazy bastard," he said fiercely. "Don't you even take a look at that bitch. I don't care what she says and what she does. I seen 'em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse that her. You leave her be." (Page 32).

I found this interesting because Lennie and George do not even know Curley's wife and they are already talking bad about her. They are only following what the other guys said to them. She probably talks to the guys because they are the only people there. It is not like there is any girls around the house she can talk to. I find it wierd how people can just judge others like that.

2."Lennie, who had been following the conversation back and forth with his eyes, smiled complacently at the compliment." (Page 34).

In this quote, this is sometimes what i do. I follow my dad and mom's lips to see what they are talking about. I can't really understand them, though, because they speak a different Filipino dialect. I end up feeling left out because my sisters understand more and I'm all like, "What?" I can imagine Lennie just following the conversation just smiling.

3."It's a lot nicer to go around with a guy you know," said George. (Page 35).

I find this quote interesting because it shows how Lennie and George are different from the other guys. They are travel partners while the other guys travel alone. They have a friendship together that is even stronger than Curley and his wife. The only one that comes close to that kind of friendship was Candy and his dog. With that friendship, George and Lennie even had goals of having their own place, while other people thought that it wouldn't happen. It seems like that would be a friendship that would last a lifetime.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 41-50
1."'Course Lennie's a God damn nuisance most of the time," said George. "But you get used to goin' witha guy an' you can't get rid of him." (Page 41).

I think i could sort of relate to this quote. My sisters annoy me sometimes and when they do, I really get mad at them. It is sort of fine with me, though, because I got used to it. And plus, you need a little bit of craziness in your life. So Lennie is probably with George, not only to be taken care of, but also George will not have to be alone 24/7.

2."He ain't no good to you, Candy. An' he ain't no good to himself. Why'n't you shoot him, Candy?" (Page 44).

I was interested in this quote because I thought to myself, "Yes, the dog smells, but it isn't your dog anyway." In some ways I think that it is okay for them to kill the dog because it is already in pain. You mine as well stop the pain so then it won't have to feel it. But then again, I also believe that it is good to wait until your time was up. Why die early when you still have time in the world. Even if you are just going to sit around doing nothing.

3. Slim took his eyes from Old Candy. "Huh? Oh! Hello, Crooks. What's'a matter?" (Page 50).

I was interested in this quote because I liked how Slim was nice to Crooks. It seems that there is still racism against African American at the time, but Slim did not seem like he was. He sounds like a nice and polite guy. I like this quote because it sounds like he is just talking to any of the the guys in a normal way. It did not sound like he changes his attitude to any kind of race.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 51-60
1."Carlson reached under his bunk and brought out his bag. He didn't look at old Candy, who still faced the wall." (Page 53).

I found in amazing how Carlson just killed Candy's dog and did not even look at him. He did not even say anything to Candy. Carlson basically tells Candy to kill his dog and when Carlson finally does it by himself, he does not even say sorry to Candy. I find that rude and mean at the same time. Carlson gets what he wants, kills Candy's best friend, and hurts his feelings, but he acts like he does not even care.

2. Lennie reached for a face card and studied it, then turned it upside down and studied it. "Both ends the same," he said. "George, why is it both ends the same?" (Page 55).

I find this interesting because I always wondered the same thing. Why are both ends the same? I always look at a card and turn it over and over again. I also thought to myself, "Woah, so cards have been like that since then, too?" The world always seems to amaze me.

3. He leaned forward eagerly. "S'pose I went in with you guys. Tha's three hunderd an' fifty bucks I'd put in. I ain't much good, but I could cook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some. How'd that be?" (Page 59).

I thought that this quote was nice because it sounds sort of like Candy wants to be free from everyone else, too. He is offering all that he has and offers to work a little just to move in with George and Lennie. With just three of them, they could work good together. They would also have each other to look for. They could be like a family and they could do anything they want and go anywhere they please.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 61-70
1."I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't ought to of had no stranger shoot my dog." (Page 61).

I thought that it would have been better for Candy to kill his own dog. At least it would not have been from a stranger. I would be hurt to know that i was killed by a family member, but if it was my somebody else, that would hurt more. I would know that it was for a reason. Not just because of the way I am.

2."Make 'um let me alone, George." (Page 63).

I was interested in this quote because it is like Lennie always has to wait for directions in order to do something. Lennie has to get the "Okay" from George all the time. He waits for George to answer to him because George is like his protecter. Without George in his life, who knows where Lennie would be? But then, it shows how Lennie really really believes and trusts in George.

3."Why ain't you wanted?" (Page 68).

I find this quote interesting, because it seems like Lennie does not know what racism is. He is stupid, but maybe that is a good thing in this case. He lets people talk and feel welcome. He doesn't know about the racism against African Americans, so as they talk, Crooks begins to get comfortable around Lennie. He isn't a threat to most people and makes other people think in a whole new way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 71-80
1."... If you... guys would want a hand to work for nothing- just his keep, why I'd come an' lend a hand. I ain't so crippled i can't work like a son-of-a-bitch if i want to." (Page 76).

I think that Lennie made Crooks think in a whole new way. First, Crooks kept saying negative comments about the small place the Lennie, George, and Candy want. But then Lennie starts to explain it in depth. He talks about how they could do anything they want. Lennie gives them a picture in their head that shows that they could be free and that they would not have to be lonely anymore. Crooks began to think of it, and i guess he just wants to start fresh with people who except him. That is why i think this quote is interesting.

2."Sat'iday night. Ever'body out doin' som'pin'. Ever'body! An' what what am I doin'? Standin' here talkin' to a bunch of bindle biffs... an' likin' it because they ain't nobody else." (Page 78).

I was interested in this quote because it shows how Curley's wife is lonely in the house. She is like one of them because she needs to find a way out, too. They have to work to support for themselves, so they will not have time to live a little. Curley's wife can not do anything because of Curley. She probably can not speak up to him because he is a man. All of them are free, but then again, they're not.

3."You got no rights comin' in a colored man's room. You got no rights messing around here at all. Now you jus' get out, an' get out quick. If you don't I'm gonna ast the boss not to ever let you come in the barn no more." (Page 80).

I was interested in this quote because of how Crooks stood up to Curley's wife. It seems that there is still racism towards African Americans at the time. It took a lot of courage for Crooks, especially how he is mostly quiet and keeps things to himself. That was a pretty risky thing to do, but he became a stronger person when he said that because he stood up for himself. I was glad that he had Candy and Lennie there for back up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 81-90
1."If you was to do that, we'd tell... We'd tell about you framin' Crooks." (Page 81).

I think that Candy is a nice guy to everyone. It seems like he is not against any race, from what I have read. When he came close to Crooks' place, he did not jut barge in and he was sort of polite in a shy way. And he did not talk to Crooks in mean way like some other people might have done. I am interested in this quote because I like how Candy stood up for Crooks. It was a risky thing for Candy to do, too, because it was an American man standing up for and African American guy against an American woman. That seems pretty amazing and courageous to me.

2."Well, a show came through, an' I met one of the actors. He says I could go with that show. But my ol' lady wouldn't let me." (Page 88).

I was interested in this quote because it shows that Curley's wife is not a bad person. She really could have been someone and could have been free. The only thing that was holding her back was her mom. And now she is stuck with someone who she does not even love. Now, she can not get out of what she has already been put into.

3."I don' like Curley. He ain't a nice fella." (Page 89).

The reason why I picked this quote was because it shows how Curley's wife really feel about Curley. It seems like she never liked Curley in the first place. I think that she was probably forced into it, because she never talked about loving him when they met. Curley's wife was not even worried when she found out that Lennie was the one who broke Curley's hand. She probably said that as a warning, because Curley is not a guy you would want to mess with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 91-100
1."She jerked her head sideways, and Lennie's fingers closed on her hair and hung on." (Page 91).

I found this interesting because it reminded me of what happened in in the beginning of the story when Lennie and George were still in Weed. Almost the same thing happened, except the change in location and different girls. Lennie touches what he like and both girls reacted to this. He scares them because he just keeps on touching what he likes. When they react to his actions, he gets scared and does not know what to do, so he ends up just holding on. Whatever actions you do, there will always be consequences.

2."And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck." (Page 91).

The reason why I found this interesing was because I was so surprised that Curley's wife was killed. The first time Lennie got in trouble was in Weed with almost the same situation. Both George and him had to hide and get away. Now, he had to runaway and hide from everyone else on his own and wait for George in the brush. I think this shows how this also show lonliness in this story. That everyone is lonely in a way; even between bestfriends.

3."That big son-of-a-bitch done it. I know he done it. Why- ever'body else was out there playin' horseshoes... I'm gonna get him. I'm going for my shotgun. I'll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I'll shoot 'im in the guts. Come on, you guys." (Page 96).

I was astonished when I heard that the guys wanted to kill Lennie. I usually hate sad endings, but then I love it because it drives me crazy. It makes me think of the book more and it turns out bieng one of my favorite books. I think that it would be pretty sad that a main character would die. George can not help Lennie this time, because if he does, he will be carried down with Lennie as well. And he did mostly everything to protect Lennie, so maybe he just wants to be free from Lennie holding him back from what he wants to do even though they were friends.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages 101-107
1."And when she spoke, it was in Lennie's voice." (Page 101).

I was interested in this quote because for a while, I was a little scared of Lennie. I get scared in movies where people are just making a conversation with themself. I thought that Lennie had chizophrenia. The same goes for the part in the book where he was talking to a big bunny. I think that what his "aunt" and the "bunny" was saying was what he thought in his head.

2."Jesus Christ, Lennie! You can't remember nothing that happens, but you remember ever' word I say." (Page 103).

The reason why i thought that this quote was interesting was because it is like Lennie always looks up to George. Lennie will always follow what George says. Most things that come out of George's mouth, Lennie remembers. I like how they are close and how they were the only two people that travel together. Not like the other guys who said that most of the other guys they know travel alone. It is always better to do things with other people instead of by yourself.

3."And George raised the gun and steadied it, and brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger." (Page 106).

I never thought that George would kill Lennie. I know that he sort of had to, but he was always there for Lennie. It was such a surprise and i was just not expecting it. But, I guess that George wanted to be the one to kill Lennie (like how Candy wanted to kill his dog and not anyone else). It is better that George killed Lennie instead of anyone else, though.
